In 2018, fewer than half of Houston's public school students "met standard" on state reading assessments. Today, schools face pandemic-related challenges that are sure to drive that number even lower. Nationally in 2019, only 37% of students scored at or above the “proficient” level on the National Assessment of Educational Progress. Most people are unaware of this dire situation. Moreover, many parents have no idea their child is falling behind, having assumed that moving to the next grade alone is evidence of a student on track. How can parents know if their child is reading at grade level or prepared for success after high school? How can we continue to focus on improving literacy rates despite the challenges of COVID-19? And what does it mean for our region’s future if we don't succeed?

This webinar explored these questions at a Literacy Summit featuring a panel of national and local experts. Quianta Moore, fellow in child health policy, moderated the virtual discussion.

This summit was co-sponsored by the Baker Institute Child Health Policy Program, the Baker Institute Center for Health and Biosciences, the Mayor’s Office of Education, Houston Education Research Consortium and Houston Independent School District Foundation.
