Seabed mining affords one of the more interesting greenfield opportunities for extracting essential and critical minerals and elements to meet a growing list of demands, and many in the Houston area are watching developments closely. At this initial event on marine minerals opportunities, the Center for Energy StudiesEnergy, Minerals & Materials Program (EMM) hosted a public armchair discussion with Theo Yameogo, EY Americas Mining & Metals leader and EY Canada National Mining & Metals co-leader. Yameogo’s discussion included highlights of developments related to marine minerals and the many challenges and the overall context of mining and minerals processing in the Americas and around the globe.

These issues and more were explored and expanded upon at an invitation-only EMM roundtable that preceded the public event. Yameogo was joined at the private roundtable by Hans Smit, CEO of Ocean Minerals; David Keddington, global supply chain vice president of Transocean Ltd.; Dieter Beike, economic and commercial advisor; Cin-Ty Lee, Baker Institute Rice Faculty Scholar; and Rachel Meidl, Baker Institute fellow in energy & environment. The EMM private roundtable and Baker Institute webinar were chaired by Michelle Michot Foss, fellow in energy, minerals and materials.

EMM roundtables bring together our CES Energy Forum member executives with invited academics, policymakers, and energy, minerals, and materials experts who meet regularly to discuss key policy issues and developments. Our past roundtables have included senior U.S. government officials, senior members of international governments, mining industry representatives, finance and trading analysts and university-based experts. Please contact Melissa Vossler at mkv1@rice.edu for more information on EMM roundtables.
