Statement from James A. Baker, III

James A. Baker, III, released the following statement on the death of Sheikh Sabah, Emir of Kuwait:

“Sheikh Sabah was an effective mediator for peace and stability in the Middle East and a passionate humanitarian whose wise leadership was inspirational. Whether working to calm difficult rivalries between competing nations or pledging disaster relief to refugees from war-torn countries, Sheikh Sabah remained focused on helping us build a better world. During my encounters with him during the first Gulf War, when he was Kuwait’s foreign minister and I was secretary of state, and later after he became Emir, Sheikh Sabah was always a forthright and trusted ally of the United States. Kuwait, the Middle East and the world will miss his steady and thoughtful hand.”
