The energy industry is a target for cybercriminals and state-sponsored hackers alike, and the threat level is rising. Security provider Bitdefender notes an upward trend in cyberattacks in the energy sector over the past year, with 5,000 attacks in February 2020 alone. Regardless of a firm’s position in the energy value chain, cyber risks present high stakes that are often underestimated, potentially costing billions of dollars and, in the worst cases, causing loss of life.
