Whether in times of prosperity or in the midst of a pandemic, acquiring capital is one of the most important challenges that a business can face. The emerging use of blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies in financial services has the potential to transform small-business lending and improve capital access for businesses excluded by conventional lending processes. A 2018 survey found that 84% of companies were already dabbling in blockchain.

For the third and final installment in its series on improving access to capital for entrepreneurs, the McNair Center for Entrepreneurship and Economic Growth hosted a panel discussion to explore the utilization of blockchain and cryptocurrencies among small businesses today and the current and future landscape of cryptocurrency regulatory and tax policy in the United States.

Alexander Hernández Romanowski, research analyst at the McNair Center, moderated the discussion with Spencer Randall, principal and co-founder of cryptocurrency analysis and rating agency CryptoEQ and the director of Rice Alumni Entrepreneurs & Innovators; Cleve Mesidor, who leads the National Policy Network of Women of Color in Blockchain and is a public policy advisor to the Blockchain Association; and Sulolit "Raj" Mukherjee, vice president and global head of tax at Binance US.

Watch the first installment in the series, on market-based approaches to improving capital access, here. The second installment, which explored nonprofit approaches to meeting the needs of entrepreneurs, can be viewed here.
