Before the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, Latin America was already immersed in crisis. After a decade of prosperity due to high commodity prices, the last five years saw economic stagnation followed by increasing political unrest. This year already did not bode well for Latin America, but the pandemic and concomitant oil price collapse have dramatically worsened the region’s future prospects. Oil dependent countries like Venezuela and Ecuador are particularly vulnerable, but even more diversified economies like Argentina, Colombia and Mexico will face significant challenges. The coronavirus pandemic has not yet exploded throughout Latin America, but it is poised to cause significant humanitarian and economic damage in a region where approximately half of workers are employed in the informal sector. In this webinar Mark P. Jones, the Joseph D. Jamail chair in Latin American Studies, and Francisco J. Monaldi, fellow in Latin American Energy, discussed broad trends in Latin America and developments in some key countries.
