Natural gas flaring has become a major concern as oil production has surged over the past several years in the Permian basin. Some operators are now seeking to significantly reduce flaring as quickly as possible. Recognizing best-in-class industry practices to address operational challenges and identifying areas where regulation can improve the status quo are important for meeting such a goal. Moreover, eliminating routine flaring can improve the financial performance of oil companies while reducing their environmental impact. This is crucial for a sector that is growing increasingly cognizant of environmental, social and governance (ESG) investor guidance.
