As the Russia-Ukraine war nears the two-year mark with its frontlines stalemated and a new war raging in the Middle East, the global energy outlook remains uncertain. Europe continues to face challenges, even though alternative supplies have been secured and investments in renewable energy have been stepped up. Against this backdrop, Belgium is preparing to assume the presidency of the Council of the European Union in January, with the energy transition one of the main challenges on the agenda. Belgium is an energy hub in the center of Europe with the Port of Antwerp-Bruges as a main gateway to European energy markets, both for traditional and renewable energy.

At this event, after an introduction by Rep. Lizzie Fletcher — member of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce and co-chair of the House’s U.S. Friends of Belgium Caucus — Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo will share insights on the current state of energy geopolitics and what may lie ahead for the first half of 2024 and beyond, as well as the role Belgium is assuming in the energy transition and the potential partnerships with the U.S. in this regard.
