Recent global events such as COP26 have emphasized the role of the private sector in accelerating decarbonization. In fact, a growing number of companies have already committed to their own net-zero goals, but new innovations and technologies are needed to achieve these aspirations.

Hydrogen has emerged as a front runner for facilitating decarbonization. It can be produced in a variety of ways, which is an advantage for capturing new and emerging demands in diverse economic environments. Moreover, hydrogen can be used to store massive amounts of excess energy generated by renewables to help balance electric power markets, and it can play a key role in decarbonizing hard-to-abate sectors like steel and transportation. However, to create a viable market for hydrogen — and to experience its broader economic benefits, like the creation of new jobs — both existing and new technologies must be utilized, and unprecedented collaborations between industry partners, policymakers and NGOs must be developed.

At this webinar, Pradeep Venkataraman, the senior manager of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, and Ken Medlock, the senior director of the Baker Institute Center for Energy Studies, discussed why creating the hydrogen ecosystem is a pivotal step in changing how we produce and deliver energy. They also considered why leveraging existing technical experience and knowledge of hydrogen will be critical to the success of this vital and complex effort.
