On April 15, 2023, the world watched as long-standing tensions between the Rapid Support Forces and the Sudanese Armed Forces erupted into one of the most devastating armed conflicts in recent memory. The war has since claimed tens of thousands of lives, displaced over 10 million people from their homes, and put 25 million at risk of starvation. Beyond the immediate humanitarian crisis, the conflict has had far-reaching effects on regional stability, social cohesion, and gender dynamics.
The Baker Institute Edward P. Djerejian Center for the Middle East hosted a public discussion on the ongoing war in Sudan, examining its impact two years after its onset. Experts from academia, humanitarian organizations, and policy circles discussed the conflict’s effects on displacement, gender relations and equity, and long-term stability in the region. The conversation also highlighted the challenges of humanitarian response efforts and the role of regional and international actors in addressing the conflict.
The event was free and open to the public.
