Security is a critical issue along the Texas-Mexico border, and increasingly so in Texas metropolitan areas. According to studies conducted in Mexico, alien smuggling profits are now approaching drug smuggling profits. Currently the magnitude of smuggling operations is of such proportions that it overwhelms immigration, law enforcement and the criminal justice systems of border states and their communities. In no community are these threats more evident than in Nuevo Laredo; however the situation is not dissimilar to what Texas and its counties are confronting as the phenomenon spills across the border. Speakers for this event will discuss the current security conditions along the Texas-Mexico border, as well as the origin and dynamics of the criminal organizations involved.
