For a quarter of a century, many interests of the United States and Mexico have converged. Mexico’s road to democracy facilitated this binational alliance, which was further enshrined in the North American Free Trade Agreement in the mid-1990s. The last four years, however, have been politically and diplomatically turbulent. The advent of the Donald Trump presidency in early 2017 and the arrival of Andrés Manuel López Obrador to Mexico’s executive office in late 2018 signified the beginning of a new divergence of interests. The two countries today do not see eye-to-eye on issues of security, economics, immigration or border management. This webinar, based on the recently published book “The Future of U.S.-Mexico Relations: Strategic Foresight,” described how the political and diplomatic layers of the U.S.-Mexico relationship are likely to unfold over the next two decades. The outcome will affect millions of North Americans from the Yukon to the Yucatan.
