Five opposition groups recently announced they would boycott the November parliamentary elections in Bahrain, but this will likely have limited ramifications for women’s political representation, according to Gail Buttorff and Bozena Welborne, contributing experts for the Women and Human Rights in the Middle East Program. Inegalitarian attitudes toward female politicians in Bahrain make it difficult for women candidates to compete against men simply because of their gender, they write.
