Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. will return to the Rice University campus and join the Baker Institute for Public Policy March 17 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. in Stude Concert Hall for a public conversation reflecting on the state of the American judicial branch and his two decades of service on the nation’s highest court.

Roberts will be joined in discussion by Lee H. Rosenthal, senior judge of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas and a trustee emerita of the Rice Board of Trustees. Baker Institute director David M. Satterfield and Rice Provost Amy Dittmar will deliver welcome remarks.

The Baker Institute, ranked the world’s No. 1 university-based think tank, advances dialogue on today’s most pressing policy issues. Since 1993, the institute has hosted global and U.S. leaders — including six presidents — while producing rigorous research on energy, health, the economy, foreign affairs and technology.

Nominated by former President George W. Bush, Roberts has served as chief justice since 2005. He previously served as a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, as principal deputy solicitor general and as associate counsel to former President Ronald Reagan. Earlier in his career, he clerked for Judge Henry J. Friendly of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and Associate Justice William H. Rehnquist of the Supreme Court.

Baker Institute members will receive priority access to tickets during the initial registration period, followed by members of the Rice community and invited Baker Institute guests. Preregistration will be required, and a valid Rice ID will be necessary for Rice community members attending in person. Sign up for the Baker Institute mailing list to receive event updates, including how to save your seat.

Media attendance: Accredited media are welcome to cover the event. Credentials will be required for entry. Details on how to request media credentials will be provided closer to the event date.
