John G. Roberts, Jr., Chief Justice of the United States, returned to the Rice University campus and joined the Baker Institute for a public conversation marking his two decades on the nation’s highest court.

In discussion with The Honorable Lee H. Rosenthal, Senior Judge of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas and Trustee Emeritus of the Rice University Board of Trustees, Roberts reflected on his experience as Chief Justice, the state of the American judicial branch, and some of the most significant moments of his tenure. Baker Institute Director David M. Satterfield and Rice University Provost Amy Dittmar delivered opening remarks.

Nominated by President George W. Bush, Roberts has served as Chief Justice since 2005. He previously served as a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, as Principal Deputy Solicitor General, and as Associate Counsel to President Ronald Reagan. Earlier in his career, he clerked for Judge Henry J. Friendly of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and then-Associate Justice William H. Rehnquist of the Supreme Court.
