This year marked the 40th anniversary of the 1982 Israel-Lebanon conflict, which played a major role in shaping the Middle East we know today. The conflict drove the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) out of Lebanon, saw the emergence of Hezbollah as an implacable foe of Israel and transformed the Arab-Israeli conflict. Three members of the Rice community shared their experiences of the event to recall its history and assess its significance.

University Professor Moshe Vardi, a Baker Institute Rice faculty scholar and the George Distinguished Service Professor in Computational Engineering at Rice, served in the Israeli Defense Forces during the conflict and told the story of this pivotal event from the perspective of one who fought in it.

Ambassador David M. Satterfield, director of the Baker Institute and the Edward P. Djerejian Center for the Middle East, was directly involved in the Israel-Lebanon conflict as a diplomat and U.S. State Department analyst for Lebanon and Syria. Satterfield, who served as the U.S. ambassador to Lebanon from 1998 to 2001 and has more than four decades of extensive bilateral and multinational negotiating background, shared his experience of the event from a diplomatic perspective.

Rudeina A. Baasiri, a graduate of the Baker Institute Master of Global Affairs program, is a living witness of the Lebanese Civil War and the 1982 Israel-Lebanon conflict, and offered a third perspective.

This event was sponsored by the Edward P. Djerejian Center for the Middle East at the Baker Institute. Follow @Baker_EPDCtrME on Twitter and join the conversation with #BakerMiddleEast.
