The nomination and election of Donald Trump as president of the United States spurred a great deal of discussion about the future of the Republican Party in America. How much do the policy platforms on which the GOP previously gained electoral success still resonate with the party's traditional supporters? Were the themes of populism associated with the Trump campaign a sign of shifting preferences among voters that will continue into the future? Or, was Trumpism more of an aberration that harmed the GOP among its suburban and corporate base? The future of the Republican Party was already a subject of fierce debate when the events of January 6 occurred, which makes answering these questions a paramount concern.

The Baker Institute’s Roundtable Young Professionals (RYP) hosted a virtual discussion with a wide range of experts. The webinar was moderated by political science fellow Mark P. Jones and covered the current state of the Republican Party as well as its future. Panelists also considered how these ongoing policy debates will be reflected in the 2022 midterm elections and the 2024 presidential election.
