The reunification of Germany was one of the most significant events in the history of modern Europe. Its resounding impact on German society and its geopolitical effects on Europe and on U.S.-transatlantic relations are highly relevant. To commemorate the 30th anniversary of this pivotal moment, this webinar featured special addresses from two distinguished global leaders: Her Excellency Angela Merkel, Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, and Secretary James A. Baker, III, the Baker Institute’s honorary chair. The program also included unique perspectives in a panel discussion featuring Prof. Dr. h.c. Horst Teltschik, foreign policy advisor to former Chancellor Helmut Kohl, and Peter C. Caldwell, the Samuel G. McCann Professor of History at Rice University. The discussion was moderated by Allen Matusow, the academic affairs director at the Baker Institute.
This event was co-sponsored by the Baker Institute, the George & Barbara Bush Foundation and the Consulate General of Germany in Houston. Remarks were also given by Ambassador Edward Djerejian, the Director of the Baker Institute; the Honorable Andrew H. Card, Jr., former White House chief of staff and former U.S. secretary of transportation; and Thomas H. Meister, the Consul General of Germany in Houston.
