The #MeToo movement erupted on social media in 2017 to address the widespread sexual assault and harassment experienced by women. At this event, Anita Hill discussed how to sustain and carry out the legacy of this movement, arguing that movements are important, but so are the efforts required to enshrine the ideals that inspire them. Her lecture challenged the audience to live up to the goals of #MeToo, to share the truth about sexual assault and harassment, and to demand action — even and especially in the face of public backlash. Hill also discussed how women must move beyond celebration and conversations on social media to inspire others and produce sustainable change.

The Baker Institute collaborated with the Center for the Study of Women, Gender and Sexuality for this event. Follow @BakerInstitute on Twitter and join the conversation online with #MeToo.

The Gray/Wawro Lectures in Gender, Health and Well-being

This event is part of the Center for the Study of Women, Gender and Sexuality’s Gray/Wawro Lectures in Gender, Health and Well-being. Through the generous support of Melanie Gray and Mark Wawro, this lecture series recognizes health as a matter of physical and social well-being and highlights gender as a key factor in determining opportunities and quality of life. Each lecture brings a leading scholar to Houston whose work inspires deeper understanding of gender and fosters public conversation that can prompt informed action toward a more just world.

Featured Speaker

Anita Hill is the University Professor of Social Policy, Law and Women's Gender and Sexuality Studies at Brandeis University. She made sexual harassment a national issue by testifying at the Supreme Court confirmation hearings for Clarence Thomas in 1991. Her bravery empowered thousands of women to bring their own sexual harassment lawsuits and helped revolutionize the treatment of women in the workplace. Today, Hill continues her mission by fighting for institutional change to increase parity and protection for women and minorities. She leads the Hollywood Commission on Sexual Harassment and Advancing Equality in the Workplace, composed of leading executives in the entertainment industry. Hill earned her J.D. from Yale University and her B.S. in psychology from Oklahoma State University.
