U.S. scientific research is often a public enterprise largely supported with government funds. But who benefits from this work? For many novel medical therapies, high prices can mean that only a few are helped. And some new technologies do not perform equally for all racial groups; artificial intelligence software, for instance, can misidentify people of color. Policy decisions affecting what scientific research is conducted, and how, are frequently made without consideration of the beneficiaries.
In this webinar, nonresident scholar Ana Iltis, director of the Wake Forest University Center of Bioethics and Health, moderated a discussion with Sheila Jasanoff, the Pforzheimer Professor of Science and Technology Studies at Harvard Kennedy School, and Mahmud Farooque, associate director of the Consortium for Science, Policy & Outcomes at Arizona State University, on the need for improved public and stakeholder engagement in developing public policy for scientific research and how taking this approach can help research outcomes more effectively benefit society as a whole.
