U.S. scientific research is often a public enterprise largely supported with government funds. But who benefits from this work? For many novel medical therapies, high prices can mean that only a few are helped. And some new technologies do not perform equally for all racial groups; artificial intelligence software, for instance, can misidentify people of color. Policy decisions affecting what scientific research is conducted, and how, are frequently made without consideration of the beneficiaries.

In this webinar, nonresident scholar Ana Iltis, director of the Wake Forest University Center of Bioethics and Health, moderated a discussion with Sheila Jasanoff, the Pforzheimer Professor of Science and Technology Studies at Harvard Kennedy School, and Mahmud Farooque, associate director of the Consortium for Science, Policy & Outcomes at Arizona State University, on the need for improved public and stakeholder engagement in developing public policy for scientific research and how taking this approach can help research outcomes more effectively benefit society as a whole.

This event was sponsored by the Baker Institute Science and Technology Policy Program and Center for Health and Biosciences in collaboration with the Wake Forest University Center for Bioethics, Health and Society. Generous support has been provided by Benjamin and Winifer Cheng, Rice University’s George R. Brown School of Engineering and the Wiess School of Natural Sciences, and by grants from the Kavli Foundation and the National Science Foundation (Grant No. 2042854).
