American diplomacy has a rich and multifaceted legacy. Successive periods in the country’s history have produced a diverse range of traditions and ideas that have influenced how the U.S. has engaged diplomatically with other nations. How have American statesmen navigated and conducted diplomacy over the years? What can foreign service professionals and the broader American public learn from past lessons? In his recent book, “America in the World: A History of U.S. Diplomacy and Foreign Policy,” Ambassador Robert Zoellick explores these themes. Zoellick served for eight years under Secretary James A. Baker III at the Treasury and State Departments as well as the White House, later becoming president of the World Bank, U.S. trade representative and deputy secretary of state.

At this event, Zoellick spoke about his book, describing its observations and what insights it holds into enduring issues in American foreign policy. He also participated in a question-and-answer session moderated by Baker Institute Director Ambassador Edward P. Djerejian.
