In his book “Washington’s Farewell: The Founding Father's Warning to Future Generations,” author and CNN senior political analyst John Avlon describes the significance of President George Washington’s Farewell Address, a cautionary letter to his fellow citizens about the forces he feared would destroy democracy. This address, often overlooked in U.S. history, continues to hold great value for contemporary policymakers.

At this event, Avlon spoke on how U.S. leaders have drawn inspiration from Washington’s Farewell Address — and how Washington’s words can shed light on controversial topics in modern American politics such as partisanship, coexistence and foreign policy. A book signing followed the presentation. Copies of the book were available for purchase courtesy of the Rice University Campus Store.
