Makhdoom Shah Mehmood Qureshi is the current foreign minister of Pakistan. Under the Zardari government, Qureshi has made peace and prosperity the centerpiece of his work by forging closer ties to India, China and the United States.

Qureshi, who hails from Multan in the Punjab province, has worked for more than 20 years toward establishing and sustaining peace in the region and friendly relations with India. A veteran leader and public official of Pakistan, he has held numerous posts at all levels of government and has dedicated his distinguished career to public service. Under the government of the late Benazir Bhutto, Qureshi distinguished himself as a true visionary in his role as minister of state for Parliamentary Affairs. He has also served as president of the Pakistan People"s Party of Punjab. He has previously served as the minister for Planning and Development Punjab, finance minister in Punjab and federal minister for Parliamentary Affairs. At the local level, he also served as district chairman for the Multan Council and the first mayor of Multan.

Born to an illustrious family of agriculturalists, Qureshi takes a keen interest in the well-being of farmers and currently heads the Farmers Association of Pakistan. He completed his law degree at Cambridge University in 1983.
