The Baker Institute Center for the Middle East, together with National Geographic Documentary Films, hosted a special screening and discussion of “Hell on Earth: The Fall of Syria and the Rise of ISIS." This documentary, produced by award-winning filmmakers Sebastian Junger and Nick Quested, chronicles Syria’s descent into the chaos that allowed the rise of the Islamic State, better known as ISIS. Pulling from nearly 1,000 hours of visceral footage — including that of families fleeing to Turkey, Kurdish fighters in Sinjar and Shia militias in Iraq, and fighters affiliated with al-Qaida in and around Aleppo and Raqqa — Junger and Quested cover the ISIS catastrophe from multiple angles and feature interviews with top experts from around the world.

Following the screening, Baker Institute director Edward P. Djerejian, former U.S. ambassador to Syria and to Israel, participated in an armchair discussion with Chauncy Glover of ABC13 (KTRK-TV).

#HellonEarth premieres Sunday, June 11, at 9/8c on the National Geographic Channel.
