A Presentation of the Center for the Study of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Research Series for 2009-2010 "The Politics of Vulnerability: Subjects, Bodies, Communities."

By bringing together scholars from the humanities and social sciences, the Center seeks to encourage new questions and provoke creative consideration of the unexamined gender and sexual dynamics of vulnerability, including the boundaries of disciplined knowledge that feminist studies continues to negotiate.

The Center for the Study of Women, Gender, and Sexuality is pleased to bring Steven Epstein, Ph.D., professor of sociology and John C. Shaffer Professor in the Humanities at Northwestern University, to Rice University as part of this year-long research series.

Steven Epstein, Ph.D., is professor of sociology and John C. Shaffer Professor in the Humanities at Northwestern University. His most recent book, Inclusion: The Politics of Difference in Medical Research (2007), charts the rise -- and assesses the consequences -- of new ways of managing difference (especially gender and race) within biomedical research in the United States. Inclusion has received multiple awards, including the American Sociological Association"s Distinguished Book Award for 2009. His previous publications include Impure Science: AIDS, Activism, and the Politics of Knowledge (1996), a study of the politicized production of knowledge in the AIDS epidemic, and the co-authored Learning by Heart: AIDS and Schoolchildren in America"s Communities (1989).

This is event is co-sponsored by the Center for the Study of Women, Gender, and Sexuality, the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy, the School of Humanities and the School of Social Sciences.
