A positive relationship between the United States and Mexico is vital for the well-being of both countries. Their economic, social and political ties run deep and have grown even stronger in the first two decades of the 21st century. Recently, the two governments have moved to renew their commercial relationship, worked together on immigration and established a new framework on security cooperation. All of this presents an important opportunity to reaffirm a partnership that will remain strategic for both nations. At this event, The Honorable Christopher Landau, United States ambassador to Mexico, offers his views on this important bilateral relationship and a pathway to a prosperous, productive future.

The Honorable Christopher Landau, J.D., is a lawyer and diplomat who currently serves as the United States Ambassador to Mexico. Early in his career, Landau clerked for Judge Clarence Thomas of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. He later clerked for Associate Justices Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas of the Supreme Court of the United States during their 1990 and 1991 terms, respectively. In 1993, Landau joined the law firm Kirkland & Ellis as an associate, and became a partner in 1995. He was chairman of the firm’s appellate practice until he left after 25 years to join Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan in 2018. He has argued nine cases before the U.S. Supreme Court, including two on behalf of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and has briefed and argued appeals in all of the U.S. Courts of Appeals. In 2017, the Chief Justice of the United States appointed him to the Advisory Committee on the Federal Rules of Appellate Procedure. Landau has also served as a trustee of the United States Supreme Court Historical Society and chair of the society’s Programs Committee. Landau earned a bachelor’s degree in history and a certificate in Latin American studies from Harvard College in 1985. He also earned a J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1989.
