His Excellency Idriss Deby Itno, president of the Republic of Chad, addresses the challenges and possibilities of stopping genocide in Darfur, Sudan. His address will be followed by a brief question and answer session. Following his military education in Chad and France, President Deby was appointed advisor to the president of the Republic of Chad, Hussein Habre, responsible for national defense and security issues. He opposed, however, Habre"s brutal dictatorship, and Deby and his supporters ousted Habre in 1990. He was appointed president of the State Council, and in 1991, after adoption of the National Charter, Deby was named president of the republic. He won office in Chad"s first democratic election and formally became president in 1996. He was reelected in 2001 and 2006. Under his leadership, oil development efforts have been successful, and the Chad-Cameroon oil pipeline has become the cornerstone of the national economy.
