Three years after the popular uprisings that swept away long-entrenched authoritarian leaders, Middle East Institute vice president of policy and research Paul Salem, Ph.D., and senior fellow Khalil al-Anani, Ph.D., will examine the state of the Arab world’s transitions. In their talk, “Assessing the Arab Spring: Three Years On,” Salem and al-Anani will discuss the dynamics behind the transformations underway, with a focus on how the democratization process has fared in countries like Egypt, Tunisia, Yemen and Libya. Salem will assess and analyze the overall trends shaping the transitions and prospects for a more democratic future. Al-Anani will highlight the case of Egypt, focusing on the new constitution and Egypt’s path toward elections. This event, co-sponsored by the Baker Institute Center for the Middle East, is part of the Middle East Institute’s recently launched initiative on Arab Transitions.
