About the Dashboard

The “Energy’s Balancing Act” dashboard is an interactive tool developed by Kenneth B. Medlock III and Miaomiao Rimmer at the Center for Energy Studies. It draws inspiration from Energy’s Tricky Tradeoffs, an infographic published in Science in 2010. The tool is designed to provide a more holistic view of the multidimensionality of the various tradeoffs involved in energy production. Every form of energy — from raw materials extraction through to end-of-use — has associated resource constraints, and understanding those constraints is an important step to understanding the direct and indirect costs of energy and having a rational conversation about the complexity of energy transitions.
