Statement of James A. Baker, III on the death of Vice President Dick Cheney
Table of Contents
With the death of Vice President Dick Cheney, America has lost a true powerhouse and enthusiastic patriot who never wavered in efforts to make his country the strongest it could be. He was an extremely bright, no-nonsense man with incredible dedication to the presidents he served. You got what you saw in Dick — an embodiment of the brand of leadership that Teddy Roosevelt described in his “The Man in the Arena” speech. Indeed, his place in history “shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.” Although the two of us did not always agree on policy, our friendship remained strong for 50 years. I will dearly miss his steadfast opinions, hearty laugh, and crooked smile. Susan joins me in sending his wife, Lynne Cheney; their two daughters, Liz and Mary; and the entire Cheney family our deepest love and heartfelt prayers.
James A. Baker, III, was the 61st U.S. secretary of state.
