“Alan Simpson was a dedicated patriot and marvelous human being who leaves behind a full, rich legacy of tireless efforts to make the world a better place. No one challenged me as much as Alan on policy issues, ranging from the federal budget as a budget hawk to the nuances of political compromise as a moderate Republican who knew how to navigate both sides of the aisle. And no one made me laugh as hard as Alan. His garrulous nature and sharp wit made it impossible for anyone to dislike him, even his opponents. He was a vestige of what many consider the Old West, a ramrod straight politician who called them like he saw them and never backed down from the truth. In today’s coarse and dysfunctional political culture, Alan is a model for those who still want to get things done. My wife Susan and I will miss our times with Alan and his widow, Ann, and we send our deepest love and heartfelt sorrow to her and the entire Simpson family.”

James A. Baker, III, was the 61st U.S. secretary of state.
