On March 4, Middle East fellow Kristian Coates Ulrichsen received the 2024 Gulf Book Award in the political studies category for his book “Centers of Power in the Arab Gulf States” (Oxford University Press, 2023). The honor came in recognition of exceptional scholarly work on the Gulf region, determined by a panel of fellows and board members at the Gulf International Forum.

Coates Ulrichsen’s book examines the nature of power in the Gulf, comparing and contrasting its origins, exercise, and opposition in six Arab countries. The book’s in-depth analysis of evolving power dynamics within the Gulf states complements his extensive publication record on Gulf politics, security, and international relations.

Gulf International Forum also highlighted previous works by Coates Ulrichsen — “The Gulf States in International Political Economy” (Springer, 2015) and “Qatar and the Gulf Crisis” (Hurst & Co, 2020) — for their significant contribution to an understanding of Gulf states in the global context.
