Baker Institute to host former secretary of state to discuss American leadership

HOUSTON – (Feb. 8, 2024) – Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will speak with David Satterfield, U.S. special envoy for Middle East humanitarian issues and director of Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy, on Rice’s campus Feb. 15 about leadership in the U.S. and the world.

Their conversation will focus on how leaders on the world stage and in higher education are responding to the present domestic and international challenges, particularly in light of violent conflicts abroad, a polarized domestic political landscape and the balance between free speech and incitement.

The event is not open to the public, but the event is available on livestream. Media who want to attend in person must register with Avery Franklin, media relations specialist at Rice University, at [email protected] or 713-348-6327.

Rice will not be available for interviews before or after her conversation.

What: A Conversation with Condoleezza Rice on Leadership in America and the World, presented by Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy as part of the Shell Distinguished Lecture Series.

When: Thursday, Feb. 15, 4-5:30 p.m. CST.

Where: Morrison Theater, Brockman Hall for Opera, Rice University and on livestream. .

Condoleezza Rice served as the 66th secretary of state of the United States under President George W. Bush — the second woman and first African American woman to hold the post. She has been a member of the Stanford University faculty since 1981, where she currently serves as Director of Stanford’s Hoover Institution.
