Mexico is facing a “triple crisis” on the public health, economic and governance fronts, with concerning implications for the energy sector and few encouraging signs for the near future, according to Tony Payan, the Françoise and Edward Djerejian Fellow for Mexico Studies and the director of the Center for the United States and Mexico.

With Mexico's economy in shambles, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador is "up against a wall" as he caters to the Trump administration, said Tony Payan, director of the Center for the United States and Mexico. "He has no choice but to cooperate with Mr. Trump. And I think Mr. Trump knows it."

The pace of deportations is accelerating as immigration agents risk infection and detention centers become Covid-19 hot spots, said Tony Payan, director of the Center for the United States and Mexico.

“There is no way ... that [Mexico's] government will have the resources to reverse the decline in oil production,” said fellow Tony Payan. "By the end of 2020, PEMEX will be saddled with debt."
