Farès el-Dahdah is a Rice faculty scholar as well as director of the university’s Humanities Research Center and a professor in the School of Humanities. His current research interests focus on the development of online geospatial platforms that describe cities over time, i.e., as they existed and as they have come to be imagined.

El-Dahdah’s activities at Rice extend across campus in his capacity as chair of the Information Technology Council and as a member of its Data Sciences Initiative’s Programming and Search Committee. He also serves on the advisory panels of Rice’s Digital Education Committee and its Center for Energy and Environmental Research in the Human Sciences.

El-Dahdah was previously a professor at Rice’s School of Architecture. He was also the Cisneros Visiting Scholar at Harvard University’s David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies, a visiting fellow at the Canadian Center for Architecture, and a recipient of the Arthur W. Wheelwright Traveling Fellowship. He is the author of “Lucio Costa, Arquiteto,” has written extensively on Brazil’s modern architecture, and is a board member of Casa de Lucio Costa and Fundação Oscar Niemeyer, two Brazilian cultural foundations.

He received his undergraduate degrees in fine arts and in architecture from the Rhode Island School of Design and pursued graduate studies in urbanism and architectural theory at Harvard University.
