Webinar — Civic Scientist Lecture Series: Innovation and the Workforce of the Future

Webinar — Civic Scientist Lecture Series: Innovation and the Workforce of the Future

The decentralization of employment has accelerated during the COVID-19 pandemic, with many employees in the science and technology sectors shifting from work at central industry-specific hubs to remote work environments. This process is expected to continue after the pandemic subsides, and could be further boosted by the expansion of high-speed internet availability planned under the Biden administration. The ability to work from almost anywhere in the country — or the world — could drastically change where the technology sector’s workforce is sourced from and placed, and how, offering myriad challenges as well as opportunities.

At this event, Baker Institute Director Ambassador Edward P. Djerejian delivered welcome remarks and Rice University President David W. Leebron moderated the discussion. Antonio Neri, CEO of Hewlett Packard Enterprise — which recently relocated its global corporate headquarters to North Houston — discussed the decentralization of the science and technology sectors and its impact on the diversity and sourcing, training and housing of the technology workforce of the future.

This event was part of the Civic Scientist Lecture Series, which is sponsored by the Baker Institute Science and Technology Policy Program with generous support from Benjamin and Winifer Cheng. Additional support is provided by Rice University’s George R. Brown School of Engineering and Wiess School of Natural Sciences and by grants from the Kavli Foundation and the National Science Foundation (Grant No. 2042854).

Featured Speaker

Antonio Neri is the president and chief executive officer of Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) — a global edge-to-cloud platform as-a-service company — responsible for the development and delivery of enterprise technology solutions and services that help organizations accelerate outcomes by unlocking value from all of their data, everywhere.

During his more than 25 years at the Hewlett-Packard Company (HP) and HPE, Neri has held numerous leadership positions. Most recently, he served as executive vice president and general manager of HPE’s Enterprise Group, which included the company’s server, networking, storage and technology services business units. Prior to HPE’s separation from HP, he ran HP’s server and networking business, where he was responsible for bringing new innovations to market and the execution of the go-to-market strategy. Before that, he led HP’s technology services business, which provided technology support and consulting services for HP’s products and solutions. Neri spent the earlier part of his career in various engineering and leadership roles in HP’s printing and personal systems business units.

Neri also led the strategy, development and introduction of many breakthrough innovations at HP and HPE, including HPE Apollo, HPE Synergy and HPE Moonshot. He was also responsible for HPE’s acquisitions and integrations of Aruba Networks, SGI, SimpliVity, Niara, Rasa Networks, Nimble Storage, Cloud Cruiser and Cloud Technology Partners.

Neri graduated from the Escuela Nacional de Educación Técnica in Argentina and attended the Universidad Tecnológica Nacional.
