The fourth and final event in the fall's Davoudi Emerging Leaders Lecture Series featured retired Brigadier General Tom Kolditz, the founding director of the Ann and John Doerr Institute for New Leaders at Rice University. Kolditz discussed the making of an effective leader with Winston Elliott, RYP chair and a major in the Army Reserve. Following their discussion, attendees were invited to attend an interactive Q&A session.
The Davoudi Emerging Leaders Lecture Series was exclusive to members of the Roundtable Young Professionals. Each event in the series featured a conversation about public policy fundamentals, practical information on working in the public policy sphere, and the charge and impact of the Baker Institute itself.

Retired Brig. Gen. Tom Kolditz, Ph.D., is the founding director of the Ann and John Doerr Institute for New Leaders at Rice University. The Doerr Institute was recognized in 2019 as the top university leader development program by the Association of Leadership Educators and was ranked fourth among the world’s top leadership development programs by Global Gurus in 2020. Prior to his work at Rice, Kolditz taught as a professor in the practice of leadership and management and served as director of the Leadership Development Program at the Yale School of Management.
Kolditz led the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Leadership at the U.S. Military Academy for 12 years. In that role, he was responsible for West Point’s teaching, research and outreach activities in management, leader development science, psychology and sociology, and was awarded the title of professor emeritus after retirement. A highly experienced global leader, Kolditz has served more than 35 years in leadership roles on four continents, with a career focused on both leading organizations and studying leadership and leadership policy across sectors. He served for two years as a leadership and human resources policy analyst in the Department of Defense, served one year as a concept developer in the Center for Army Leadership, and was the founding director of the West Point Leadership Center.
Kolditz holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology and sociology from Vanderbilt University, three master’s degrees, and a Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Missouri.
