Recent political and economic events in several major Latin American economies have heightened concerns regarding political stability in the region and the direction that economic policies are likely to take in the future. The Baker Institute's Americas Project Colloquium - 2002, The Political Consequences of Economic Turmoil in Latin America, focused on the political, economic and social implications of these events. The archived events include keynote addresses by Ambassador Roger Noriega, the Permanent Representative of the United States to the OAS, and Enrique Peñalosa, the former Mayor of Bogotá, Colombia. There follows a panel discussion featuring panelists Michael Shifter (Inter-American Dialogue) discussing the political aspects of the theme; Dr. Carlos Zarasaga (Dallas Federal Reserve Bank) discussing the economic aspects; and, Dr. Kurt Weyland (University of Texas at Austin), discussing the social aspects; and moderator Joe Barnes, a research fellow at the Baker Institute.
