After the al-Ahli Arab hospital explosion, offering refuge to Palestinians became “politically untenable” for Egypt, Jordan and other Arab states, Norman said. “Now, even the U.S. is upholding the line that Egypt will not be complicit with the permanent removal of Palestinians from their territory, which would be tantamount to ethnic cleansing,” she said.
“There will be a need for Arab states to take the lead in trying to devise some sort of policy response which can tackle the underlying issues as well as the most immediate ones which prompted [Hamas' attack on Israel] on October 7,” said Coates Ulrichsen.
