Biography

Rachel Tolbert Kimbro, Ph.D., is Dean of the School of Social Sciences at Rice University and Professor of Sociology. She earned her M.A. in sociology at Princeton University and her B.A. in sociology and policy studies at Rice. Following her doctoral work at Princeton, Kimbro was a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health and Society Scholar at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she received interdisciplinary training in population health. Kimbro’s research focuses on family and neighborhood influences on child health and well-being. Her current work examines family and neighborhood influences on food insecurity and children’s sleep. She recently published a book on Hurricane Harvey’s impact on mothers and children. She is a Founding Faculty Member at Texas Children’s Hospital’s Center for Child Health Policy and Advocacy, a Baker Institute Rice Faculty Scholar, and adjunct faculty at Baylor College of Medicine.
