Biography
Dalton R. George, Ph.D., is a visiting scholar in science and technology policy at Rice University’s Baker Institute. In addition to his visiting scholar post at the Baker Institute, he is a program manager for innovation and society at the Engineering Biology Research Consortium and an adjunct professor at the Weiss School of Natural Sciences. His research in the field of science, technology, and society studies focuses on social dimensions and science-related policy issues for synthetic biology. His current projects span across several topics that include biosafety/biosecurity issues for dual use research of concern (DURC) and the responsible development and deployment of biotechnologies in food, agricultural, & ecological systems.
During his doctoral training, George was an National Science Foundation National Research Traineeship Fellow at North Carolina State’s Genetic Engineering and Society Center, where his research focused on public engagement and approaches to responsible research and innovation. He has published research on various social and policy issues related to emerging environmental and agricultural biotechnologies, including the transgenic American chestnut, gene drive technology, and gene-edited crops.
George received his B.S. from Michigan State University, an M.S. from Drexel University, and a Ph.D. from North Carolina State University.
