Baker Institute Student Forum - The Changing Presidential Primary System

This event will educate students, faculty and staff about the ways in which nominations are changing due to the changing order of primaries, and the likely political implications of these changes. This election cycle will be different from any other in a number of ways, including an earlier election season, earlier primaries, and an even larger "Super Tuesday." Radical changes to the primary system are being proposed, from a nationwide primary day to a rotating primary schedule. Panelists will give a historical perspective on this year's election cycle, and discuss themerits and drawbacks of various proposals. Panelists will include Jerrold Rusk, professor of political science at Rice University, and Ryan O'Donnell, spokesperson for a nonpartisan electoral change advocacy group.
