In the early 2000s, the Inter-American Development Bank conducted a series of analyses evaluating the role of key actors in the public policymaking process in eight Latin American countries — Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Paraguay and Venezuela. This working paper reviews the degree to which these eight country-level analyses still accurately portray the actors and their present-day roles in the policymaking process.

As of 2013, Colombia faces various challenges associated with managing an uncertain international economic environment and reversing adverse long-term trends, notably high domestic inequalities and the weakening of its manufacturing and agricultural sectors.

Latin America recently experienced a new wave of nationalization in the hydrocarbon sector with tax increases and the participation and control of the state. There is considerable variation in the specific policies that Latin American countries implemented, however.
