David Cook is assistant professor of religious studies at Rice University specializing in Islam. His areas of specialization include early Islamic history and development, Muslim apocalyptic literature and movements, historical astronomy, and Judeo-Arabic literature. Cook has completed a manuscript on the theme of martyrdom in Islamic civilization for Cambridge University Press (due to be released October 2006), and is working on a book (together with Olivia Allison) on the policy aspects of suicide attacks for the United States.
