Nonresident ScholarBiofuels increasingly have been viewed as a means to secure the future of rural communities that traditionally depend on cultivation of food crops. Yet using certain types of biomass – in particular, food crops – for fuel also raises a number of environmental and social concerns, writes postdoctoral fellow Ghasideh Pourhashem.
