“Full price transparency would aid both patients and payers in choosing the most cost-effective providers, but we're not having that yet,” said health policy scholar Marah Short. A study coauthored by Short, health economics fellow Vivian Ho, et al., found that many highly respected U.S. hospitals are not in compliance with new price transparency legislation, and there are some dramatic differences in prices among those that are reporting them publicly.

More than 18% of Texans are uninsured, the highest rate in the country. “Even if patients are getting free or reduced care, someone has to pay for it,” said Marah Short, associate director of the Center for Health and Biosciences. “That is raising the cost for everyone.”
