Peter J. Hotez, fellow in disease and poverty, and Jennifer R. Herricks, postdoctoral fellow in disease and poverty, have developed the "worm index," which they found to have a strong association with a nation's human development index. Read their paper, published in the journal PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases in April 2015.
"Through this paper, we've shown how the major neglected tropical diseases, which include intestinal worm infections, schistosomiasis and lymphatic filariasis, are intimately tied to human development," said Hotez.
