Egan showing that startups formed through existing incubators and accelerators in Houston raise venture capital at substantially lower rates than successful institutions in Silicon Valley.

Zika outlook less dire as disease wanes in Southern Hemisphere
New cases of Zika transmission are declining in Caribbean and South American countries that were hardest hit by the mosquita-bourne virus according to public health officials, the Houston Chronicle reports. Peter Hotez, fellow in disease and poverty, said while Texas does not have enough disease surveillance in place to detect whether the virus is still present after a local transmission in South Texas last year, he stated that Zika probably will not be brought into the U.S. this summer. “The sources of last year's epidemic are largely gone,” Hotez said."There's less virus circulating in the Southern Hemisphere to be imported and introduced into places like Texas and Florida."

Abbott calls summer special session
Gov. Greg Abbott's order to convene a special session of the Texas Legislature was a move to reassert his dominance over staunch conservatives in his party, political science fellow Mark P. Jones told the Houston Chronicle. "[The session's agenda] is a Christmas list of everything the conservative advocacy groups wanted. (Abbott) deftly has boiler-plated his right flank. If [Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick] was somehow contemplating any challenge of Abbott's standing with those Republicans, he can forget it."
