On behalf of the fellows, scholars and staff of Rice University's Baker Institute, I wish to express our support to our friends, supporters and their families in the aftermath of Harvey's devastation.
Though Rice University remains closed until Labor Day and we have had to postpone scheduled events through September 8, we are striving to resume a normal work flow as soon as possible while extending help to those on our staff who have endured hardships such as dislocations due to flooding and power outages.
Our thoughts are also with the victims of this unprecedented storm. We are gratified by the extraordinary example of citizenship Houstonians are giving to the world. At the same time, we must begin drawing lessons from this tragedy.
Consequently, we plan, in collaboration with our colleagues at Rice University, to shape policy recommendations addressed to the private and public sectors recommending ways such a catastrophic outcome can be mitigated in the future.
