Former Mexico Center Interns

The Baker Institute offers an internship program designed to provide Rice University undergraduate students with public policy experience and exposure to a nonprofit think tank environment.

The Mexico Center offers Rice undergraduate students research or administrative internship opportunities. Research interns work directly with institute fellows and scholars on critical policy issues in Mexico. Interns work with senior staff in a professional office environment, providing essential support in a security-sensitive setting.

Benito Aranda-Comer '17 is an undergraduate student at Rice University majoring in Latin American studies and history with a minor in poverty, justice and human capabilities. He recently spent a gap year in Brazil, where he worked in a community center in one of Salvador's poorest neighborhoods. Since arriving at Rice he has taken advantage of every opportunity to learn about Latin America's contemporary issues, and has traveled to Cuba, Argentina, Colombia and extensively within Brazil during the past two years. He just returned from his Fall 2015 semester abroad in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Tomas Arango ’20 is an undergraduate student at Rice University majoring in economics and policy studies. His research interests include economic development, international relations and human rights, particularly in relation to Latin America.

Oscar Bejarano '11 received a B.S. from The University of Texas at Austin in 2009 and an M.S. from Rice University in 2011. He is currently pursuing his Ph.D. in electrical and computer engineering through the Rice Networks Group at Rice University.

Xun Cao is a master’s student at Rice University majoring in statistics with concentration in data mining. Originally from Hangzhou, China, Xun lived in Seattle for four years and obtained a bachelor’s degree in economics and statistics from the University of Washington. Her research interests include statistical modeling, data visualization and conducting policy analysis of the U.S.-Mexico border.

Mariana Carmona is a student at Texas A&M University pursuing a master's in financial economics. She earned her bachelor’s degree on economics and a minor in German from Also from Texas A&M. Originally from Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, she has lived the past seven years in Houston with her family. She studied abroad in Germany during the fall of 2015 and intends to keep perfecting her German. Her research interests include economic policy, economic development and U.S.-Mexico border studies.

Justin Chang ’19 is an undergraduate student at Rice University majoring in economics and political science. His research interests include the Mexican war on drugs as well as U.S.-Mexico relations.

Previously, he participated in a mission trip to Costa Rica where he taught elementary school students and constructed an outdoor patio. He is interested in government, economics and history. Elizabeth Jowers '20 is a Rice University undergraduate student double-majoring in Latin American studies and political science. She is interested in government transparency, education and international relations, particularly the U.S.-Mexico border relationship. She is a 2017 Loewenstern Fellow, researching education nonprofit strategies in Lima, Peru. Jowers has traveled to Mexico, Honduras and Bolivia, and plans to study abroad in Mexico and Spain.

Since starting her studies at Rice, Morales has been involved in many Baker Institute events related to Latin America. Bryan Najera Demoraes ‘21 is an undergraduate student at Rice University majoring in political science and Latin American studies. His research interests include migration between the U.S., Mexico and Brazil, and U.S.-Latin America relations. He has studied abroad in Spain and plans to do the same in Brazil.

Spencer O'Connor '21 is an undergraduate student at Georgetown University studying science, technology and international affairs with a minor in Latin American studies. His research interests include economic development, election processes in Latin America and immigration throughout Latin America.

Nick Okerlund ‘21 is an undergraduate student at the Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service. He plans to major in international political economy, with a concentration on international development. His interests include human rights and political institutions, particularly in developing countries. Okerlund has traveled through much of Latin America, and intends to study abroad in the region as well.

Tania Piñon ’18 is a recent graduate from Rice University, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in economics. While at Rice, she worked on research related to the economic development of oil fields and also completed a project on international human trafficking during a semester abroad in Spain. Piñon will be matriculating at The University of Texas School of Law this fall where she will pursue a J.D. with a concentration in energy law.
